The final concert of the Festival opens with the ever-popular piano quartet by Schumann, a work with the same vitality as the Mozart that opened the weekend. Anders Nilsson is a contemporary Swedish composer, whose "Five Ochestral Pieces" are in fact for solo piano; the "orchestral" side comes from the wonderful sonorities he employs and the sheer demands made on the pianist (tonight played by Martin Sturfält). Leon Boëllmann would surely be a household name today were it not for his untimely death at the age of 35; certainly these two short works are miniature gems. The first Windrush Valley Chamber Music Festival concludes with Mendelssohn's famous octet, an undisputed master piece and one of the most popular pieces in the chamber music repertoire.
