An exuberant work, Mozart's E flat piano quartet is the perfect opening to a springtime music festival and is one of his finest chamber works. Bartók wrote many duos for two violins, and the selection performed tonight reflects the lively, folk-influenced nature of these pieces. Another work for two string instruments follows the interval; Beethoven's charming and rarely-heard duo "with two obligato eyeglasses," an affectionate poke at the two short-sighted musicians it was written for. The concert is rounded off with another E flat piano quartet, Dvorák's second work in this genre. The slow movement in particular is one of Dvorák's finest pieces of music, and the last movement provides a thrilling finale to the concert.
